Hening Retreat: Hening Retreat

A fictional guesthouse that gives every guest one bound field book. Its site is that book, open on a desk: choose a notebook and the length of stay, fill each day’s three windows or leave them open, write a field note, slip in prompts, then print a pocket book.

Why it is arranged this way.

The capture shows the implemented opening. Notes connect its composition to the working experience and its mobile behavior.

  1. 01

A bound book, not a header

A cloth cover, a stitched gutter and thumb tabs on the fore edge frame every page; the tabs are the navigation, one per day. On a phone the cover becomes a strip with hanging tabs that scroll to the current one.

  2. 02

    Open windows are written down

Each notebook arranges three windows a day. An open window is an empty circle in the contents and a dashed row on the day page: a planned gap, never a missing entry, and never told by colour alone.

  3. 03

    Plates with honest captions

Photographs sit on mounts with corners, numbered like a field journal. Each caption names the photographer and says Hening does not run the cabin and is not at Bromo. On a phone, text and actions come before the plate.

WHAT IS HERE / WHAT COMES NEXT

Know what you are choosing.

Show what a day there feels like before anyone books.

Working in this demo

  • Notebook index, length of stay and contents with open windows
  • Day pages with a day arc, three windows and a ruled field note
  • Six prompts slipped into a chosen day and window
  • A5 pocket book print, TXT pack and a day export
  • Field book kept in this browser; earlier daybooks still read

This tool includes a working workspace and its own component book. Its controls operate on local state.

Production integrations to discuss

  • A real host’s information, programme and photography with rights, and any enquiry, booking or payment channel need a separately agreed implementation.

Exports are generated in your browser. No account, cloud storage or external service is connected.

A limit to plan around

Fictional design study. Hening has no address, rooms, schedule or prices and books nothing; photographs are licensed references (Bromo is not its location) and exports are local concept plans.

Delivery & customization

Page scope, brand assets, content, handover, hosting, costs and support are discussed in a consultation before work begins. The demo is a reference for that conversation.

Prepare a brief for this direction

The idea

Free time, on purpose. Many retreats and nature guides hand guests a notebook with daily prompts; here its parts are the interface: a cloth cover and stitched gutter frame every page, thumb tabs on the fore edge are the navigation, a ribbon marks the page, ruled pages hold notes, and mounted plates and a rubber stamp come from the retired Nusa field journal.

Visual language

Field paper, fern ink, a wood-brown ribbon and stamp, moss cloth and pale plate mounts. Ruled lines appear only on pages and as contents leaders. No paper texture or photographed leather: the book is drawn with lines, flat colour, stitches and one soft shadow. Filled and open windows read through ● / ○ and solid / dashed lines, never colour alone.

Typography

Alegreya 500, a serif drawn for literary text with the lively rhythm of a pen, sets the page titles, day names, tabs and the Hening wordmark; its old-style figures suit folios such as “Day 2” and “02 / 03”. DM Sans carries reading text, labels and controls.

Layout & composition

Every page is one spread of the book on a desk: a 10px cloth cover, two pages either side of a stitched gutter, thumb tabs on the right fore edge (Cover, Prompts, Day 1…8, Pack) and a ribbon in the gutter or the outer margin. Below 900px the book becomes one page under a cloth strip with hanging tabs that scroll to the current one; text and actions come before the plate.

Motion & interaction

Turning to another day plays one short page turn (the right page swings in from the gutter) and moves focus to the day’s title; reduced motion removes it. Nothing loops or moves on its own.

Under the surface

Static bilingual Next.js pages. The field book stays in this browser under the same key as the earlier daybook, validated with Zod on every read; earlier drafts read unchanged. The day comes from ?day= in the URL. Print (A5 pocket book) and TXT exports are made locally. No account, booking or server.

Designed for everyone

Tabs are links with aria-current; notebooks are pressed buttons and their change is announced; each window is a labelled select; notes are labelled ruled text areas with a counter. Open windows are marked by shape and line, not colour. Plates carry truthful captions; ribbon, stamp and stitches are decorative.

Inside the experience

  • Bound field book with fore-edge tabs for every day
  • Three notebooks, 1–7 nights and three windows a day
  • Ruled field note for each day
  • Six field prompts to slip into any window
  • A5 pocket book print and TXT field pack
  • Own component and state book
  • Local brand personalization

A good fit for

  • Small retreats, guesthouses and homestays with a programme, nature and birdwatching guides, writing or art residencies and slow-travel hosts, for visitors who want to know what a day there feels like before they write to the host.
